Benchmark re-imagining of an Eastern Suburbs Semi from a rudimentary shell

Located close to Centennial Park, this property was purchased as a deceased estate and was stripped back to the bare shell as part of a total renovation.

The front was retained in a traditional façade aesthetic with cottage garden in front, while the interior and rear extension were designed in a more contemporary vein as per the client’s brief.

A split-level opportunity presented itself at the rear of the house due to the slope of the block. A generous ceiling height was then achieved in the extension to concur with the scale of the original property and a split-level formed from the dining area down to the lounge room.

A seamless, step-free connection was made to the rear garden terrace via new bi-fold doors.

A substantial new feature side window was also added into the dining area to capture northerly sun and open up the long side of the semi to local views and breezes. The dining area also gained more character and focus through this window.

A subsequent upper level addition has been designed to provide additional bedrooms and a master-bedroom with ensuite bathroom and external terrace. North facing windows are shown in the 3D image with carefully designed sun-shading and high level strip windows encouraging natural ventilation and purging of hot air from lower level. The upper level is set back from the front ridge of the existing roof to retain the form of the original roof on the street façade.

Outcome : Former deceased estate re-imagined as a contemporary family home with ongoing potential explored for further upgrades.
