COLONIAL HERITAGE & ANCIENT CHINESE FENG SHUI

Located in the State Heritage-significant Grafton Bond Building in Hickson Road in the City of Sydney, this corporate fitout had many additional considerations in its design beyond those of a standard corporate fitout. Inserted within a heritage item, the fitout had to comply with rigorous requirements of both the Heritage Council of NSW and those of the City of Sydney. These involved detailed considerations regarding fixings to original walls and ceilings, layout relative to existing features such as timber columns, colour scheme and obtaining independent Heritage Reports on the proposal.

The client was also interested in the Feng Shui aspects of the layout and this was duly considered and integrated into the design.

The layout was developed to provide a clear, functional arrangement of spaces within two structural bays of the building.

Linking these areas through existing masonry arches was a key element of ensuring the two halves operated in tandem, which was of paramount importance to the Feng Shui circulation. Judiciously placed full height glass panels also allowed the robust original timber columns to ‘read’ through the contemporary partitioning system.

Aesthetically, we utilised the client’s corporate blue, adding other contemporary colours as a juxtaposition to the muted original materials and colours of the core building fabric, to further delineate the original materials and forms from those of the modern fitout.

We successfully steered the design and documentation through the approvals process, as well as sourcing other consultants and contractor to implement the project.

Outcome : A modern, supremely functional interior has been customised within a character-filled, heritage-listed shell to ensure the corporate culture of this innovative company would continue to flourish.
